Mary Alice Hamnet was born on 23rd March 1897 at Winwick in Lancashire, daughter of Ellen Hamnett, formerly Lowe, and her husband Samuel Hamnett, a farm bailiff. Mary Alice appears to have been known by her middle name. She was baptised when she was two years old at Winwick. The 1901 census finds her living with her parents and siblings on Poets Lane in Winwick.
Some time between 1901 and 1911 Alice's father died, and the family also left Winwick and moved to the neighbouring town of Newton-le-Willows. Alice appears in the 1911 census living with her mother and siblings at 10 Alfred Street in Newton.
In 1920, Alice married William Lewis. He was originally from Luton in Bedfordshire, over 150 miles away. He had served in the army during the Great War and had suffered a serious leg injury in 1917 following a serious leg injury in battle in France, caused when a shell burst beside him as he was going over the top from the trenches. He was sent back to Britain to the Lord Derby Military Hospital at Winwick, close to where Alice was living, which is presumably how they met. Perhaps she worked at the hospital.
Alice and William went on to have three children together in the Newton-le-Willows area: William in 1920, Alice Joyce in 1922 and Alfred in 1931.
At the outbreak of the Second World War, Alice, William and their children were living at 78 Mill Lane in Newton-le-Willows. William was working in textile furnishing production. Alice's mother was still living at 10 Alfred Street, just around the corner. Alice's mother died in 1946.
By 1952 the family had left the Newton-le-Willows area and moved over 200 miles north to the small village of Ashfield, just north of Dunblane in Perthshire, Scotland. Their daughter Alice died there in 1952, aged just 29.
By 1967 they had moved into the town of Dunblane, living at 18 Kippendavie Avenue. Alice died in hospital in nearby Stirling on 30th October 1967, aged 70. William survived her by about twelve years.
