Mary Ann Grant was baptised on 27th January 1822 at Baldock in Hertfordshire, daughter of George and Ann Grant. The 1841 census finds Mary living with her father and siblings in Baldock.
Later that year, Mary married Abraham Newland. They appear to have had at least two children together. Abraham died in 1849, aged 31. The 1851 census finds Mary living at Norton End, on the edge of Baldock but then in the neighbouring parish of Norton. She was living with her two children and her brother, and she was described as being in receipt of poor relief.
In 1853 Mary married Joseph Pratt, an agricultural labourer whose first wife had died in 1846. Mary and Joseph went on to have a daughter in 1853, but she died at the age of one. They then had a son in 1855. However, during 1856 first Joseph died, aged 43, then their young son died a few months later.
In 1857, Mary married for a third time. Her third husband was William Studman, who was over twenty years her senior. They appear to have had one daughter together. The 1861 and 1871 censuses each find Mary living with William and her children in the Norton Street area of Baldock, and working as a straw plaiter.
Mary died on 18th January 1874, aged 52. William survived her by about fifteen years.
