Mary Grace's origins have yet to be established. The age given when she died suggests that she was born around 1776, whilst in the 1841 census she indicated that she was born in Hertfordshire.

Mary's first confirmed sighting is on 14th October 1796, when she married John Hobbs at Great Gaddesden in Hertfordshire. They went on to have a son called Ezekiel in 1797 and a daughter called Sarah in 1799 at Great Gaddesden. After a nearly fourteen year gap, they had a daughter called Harriet in 1813. Harriet's baptism describes John as a farmer.

Mary's son Ezekiel moved to the town of St Albans where he became a victualler. He died in 1839, aged 42. In his will he left property to his sisters Sarah and Harriet.

The 1841 census finds Mary and John living at Cheverells Green in the parish of Flamstead, a couple of miles north-east of Great Gaddesden. Mary was described as a servant, whilst John was an agricultural labourer.

Mary died in 1850, when she was said to be 73 years old. She was buried at Great Gaddesden on 4th April 1850. Her last abode was given as Ballingdon, being a hamlet on the borders of the parishes of Great Gaddesden and Flamstead, not far from Cheverells Green. John survived her by two years.
