- Family legend says that she was full-blooded Cherokee
- Mary Ellen met James Alexander at the Zoah Church Sunday School; they were married at the home of the Reverend Robbins where they had come on horseback, on Christmas Eve, 1885. They spent most of their married life on a farm in Clark County, IN. She loved company--once a guest hugged her so hard, she had several broken ribs. She lived with her daughter, Anna Alexander Hadley, in Jeffersonville, IN for many years until her death at age 96.
