Mary Ellingworth was baptised on 1st April 1810 at Barkestone in Leicestershire, daughter of Violet Ellingworth, formerly Piser, and her husband Seth Ellingworth, a shoemaker. The family did not stay long in Barkestone after Mary's birth; by 1812 they were living at Granby in Nottinghamshire, and by 1817 the family had settled at Oakham in Rutland.
On 12th May 1835, aged 25, Mary married a baker called Josiah Mason at Oakham. They went on to have five children between 1836 and 1851, although their eldest died when she was only one year old. The 1841 census finds the family living on Mill Street in Oakham. They later left Oakham and moved around various villages in Rutland. In 1843 they were living at Braunston, the 1851 census finds them living at Glaston, and in 1861 they were living at Bisbrooke.
Some time between 1861 and 1871 the family left Rutland and moved to Leicester, living at 1 Bay Street. Josiah died in Leicester in 1872, aged about 60. Mary survived him by about three years. She died at Leicester on 2nd May 1875, aged 65.

Baptisms 1810 / Mary daughter of Seth and Violet Ellenworth April 1st
This baptism has been linked to the Mary Ellingworth who married Josiah Mason at Oakham in 1835 on the basis that in the censuses the adult Mary Mason gave her place of birth variously as Baston, Plunger, and Barston Lodge, all of which appear to be mis-recordings of Barkestone or places close to it. The witnesses to Mary and Josiah's marriage were a William and Catherine Ellingworth, and the Mary baptised at Barkestone in 1810 had siblings called both William (baptised at Barkestone in 1807) and Catherine (for whom no baptism has yet been found, but when she married at Oakham in 1838 she reported that her father was Seth Ellingworth). From 1817 onwards Seth and Violet were living at Oakham, judging by the baptisms of their children which have been found. Moreover, the baptism of Mary and Josiah's eldest daughter at the Wesleyan Chapel in Oakham in 1836 records that Mary was the daughter of Seth and Violet Ellingworth.
