Mary Darby's origins are unclear. Her birthplace was recorded as not known in the 1861 census, although she had indicated in the 1841 census that she was born in Hertfordshire. She gave ages suggested she was born around the early 1790s.
Her first confirmed sighting is on the last day of 1814, when she was married at St Paul's Walden in Hertfordshire to John Cain, a tanner. At the time of their marriage Mary was living in the neighbouring parish of St Ippolyts. After their marriage they settled in St Paul's Walden, having five children baptised there between 1815 and 1827.
The 1841, 1851 and 1861 censuses each find Mary and John living in Whitwell, the main village in the parish of St Paul's Walden, with a selection of their children and grandchildren living with them in each census.
Mary died shortly after the 1861 census, being buried at St Paul's Walden on 30th May 1861. She was said to be 72 years old. John outlived her by two years.
