Mary Carpenter's origins have yet to be established. Her first confirmed sighting is on 6th September 1768, when she married Vincent (or Vinsent) Preston at Long Sutton in Lincolnshire.

They went on to have six children baptised at Long Sutton between 1769 and 1775, although at least two died young. Most of the children's baptisms describe Vincent as being a labourer, although in 1773 he was described as a farmer.

Mary died in 1776, being buried at Long Sutton on 5th May. Vincent survived her and went on to marry again just under three years after her death.
