Mary Capper's origins have yet to be established. If the age given when she died was correct then she was born around 1746.

Mary's first confirmed sighting is on 15th October 1787, when she married a labourer called Joseph Alce at Wheathampstead in Hertfordshire. He was about 23 years her senior and a widower, having lost his first wife earlier that year.

The following year, Mary and Joseph had a son, Benjamin Capper Alce, baptised at Wheathampstead.

Joseph died in 1803, when he was said to be 80 years old. Mary survived him by over 25 years. She was buried at Wheathampstead on 27th March 1829, when she was said to be 82 years old. Immediately before her death she had been living in the poor house.
