Obituary

Surrounded by those she loved, Mrs. Robert E. Sheldon sand into a peaceful sleep at noon from which she wil not wake until the resurrection morn. For some time past she was been confined to her home 683 East Broad street, and while not entirely unexpected death was quite sudden, heart failure being the cause. Her death will be a decided shock to the hosts of friends throughout the city.

She was the daughter of the late Mr. C. P. L. Butler, one of the most prominent citizens of Columbus. She was born in this city and her entire life has been spent here, where she is well known and universally loved. When quite young she united with the Second Presbyterian Church and up to the time of her death she was an active, earnest and consistent member of that church.

Mrs. Sheldon was at tone time prominent in charitable work, until about 10 years ago being very active in the relief work of McCoy post, G.A.R. As president of this association she labored faithfully and well until compelled to relinquish some of the cares. About 10 years ago she suffered a slight stroke of paralysis and since that time she has been seen but little in society, the cares of a large family demanding nearly her entire attention.

She was essentially a home woman, finding her chief delight within the family circle. Here she reigned supreme, drawing her large family around her by the cords of a mother's love. Left to mourn her untimely end is her devoted husband, Mr. Robert E. Sheldon, to whom she was married in February 1869, their married life having been singularly happy. The children, who will miss a mother's kindly solicitude and care, are: Ralph, Butler, Harriet, Mary, Robert, jr., Thomas and Mrs. S. P. Bush, all of whom except the latter, reside in the home, which has been darkened by the angel of death.

Mrs. Sheldon's maiden name was Mary Butler, three brothers and one sister surviving her: Messrs. Charles H. Butler and C. P. L. Butler, of Columbus; Theodore E. Butler, of Giverny, France, and Mrs. L. R. Doty, of Chicago. While not in the best of health for the past 10 years, still Mrs. Sheldon was not confined to the house much except during the past year. A complication of heart trouble seized her about a month ago and since that time her decline has been gradual, the family, however, being unprepared for the death which came so suddenly to rend the family circle. Her life has been singularly sweet and lovely, and for this reason the parting will be all the harder for members of the family and friends to bear. Truly a good and noble woman has passed to her eternal reward. [2]
