Facts and Events
Titus County, Texas, 1850 census:[2]
- Evans, Mary Bicknell 21 yrs [no occ.] (real estate = $160) b. Missouri
- Mary 7 yrs b. Texas
- William 5 yrs b. Texas
- Sarah 3 yrs b. Texas
- Smiley, Amanda 17 yrs b. Missouri
NOTE: This family (with separate dwelling & family numbers) is listed immediately following William Becknell & his wife, Mary. The elder Mary, above, is listed as "Mary Evans [ditto mark]". The three children each are listed by first name with a ditto mark immediately below their mother's "Evans" -- which I take to mean that *their* surname was "Evans." The only conclusion I can make is that the enumerator meant to show that the elder Mary was "Mary (Becknell) Evans" -- daughter of William & Mary (Cribbs) Becknell listed immediately above, and the (probable) widow of someone named "Evans." This also is born out by the 1860 census listing for Mary (Cribbs) Becknell, who has "Sarah Evans," aged 12, living with her -- presumably her granddaughter, and the same Sarah as listed above in 1850.
