Mary Aspell's origins have yet to be established. Her first sighting is on 15th May 1865, when she married Martin Kelly at Monasterevin in County Kildare, Ireland. At the time of her marriage she described herself as being twenty years old, living at Rickardstown, and being the daughter of a labourer named Thomas Aspell.

Mary had a son named Patrick born just a few weeks after her marriage. The family has yet to be traced after Patrick's baptism.
