[edit] About Marvin DizackMarvin Dizack was born 2 February 1918 in Wisconsin, the son of Harry Dizack (1889-1985) and his wife Rose Chudnow (abt. 1898-1980), both Russian Immigrants who came to America prior to 1917. Marvin's parents moved to the Los Angeles, California area prior to the early 1940's. He enlisted into the United States Army during World War II at age 25 while living in Los Angeles. He is listed as having completed 4 years of high school, working aa a retail manager and being married at the time of his enlistment.During World War II, Dizack served with Gen. George Patton's 3rd Army at the Normandy beachhead on "D" Day, the Bastogne Bulge and at the liberation of Buchenwald Concentration Camp. Marvin received his honorable discharge as a high-pointer from the U.S. Army after the war. Marvin immediately joined Southern California supermarket operator Clark Markets after the war as Manager of their Bellflower, California location. Before long, Dizack was promoted to General Manager of the entire chain of Clark Markets, and in 1948 was elevated to the position of Vice President and General Manager.Prior to 1959, Marvin Dizack had joined Stacy Drugs as its President. He brought his "supermarket know-how" to Stacy Drugs and introduced "the latest in self-service device services... for the ultimate in cleanliness and easy-flowing traffic" in addition to a "complete photo department, sundries, confections, stationary, vitamins and prescription drug department". After working for Clark Markets and Stacy Drugs, Marvin Dizack assumed the positon of General Manager of Better Food Markets, an upstart supermarket chain started by several ex-Clark's Market executives that grew to approximately 18 locations throughout Southern California. He was later promoted Executive Vice President of the chain and helped run Better Food Market for several years until they were split into two groups, part of which was sold to grocery competitor Food Giant. In 1969, Dizack was listed as one of the Patent Assignee's [Owners] for a U.S. Patent (#3590962) for a "metering brake" designed to stop shopping carts from travelling past a store's parking lot, to reduce the loss or theft of store shopping carts. Such innovations gave Marvin Dizack the reputation of being on the forefront of retail technology and being "one of the smartest grocers in the industry", according to those who knew him. Martin Dizack also was known for his support of worthy community causes including the Community Chest, American Red Cross and Father Flanigan's Boys Town.
