Martin was born in the town of Vacha in the Wartburgkreis district in Thuringia. He was one of many German mercenary soldiers who was brought to North America to fight for the British during the American Revolutionary War. He arrived in the Colonies in 1777 at the age of fifteen. He was in the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812.
