Martha Wickenden was born in 1847 at Edenbridge in Kent. She was the daughter of a carpenter named Charles Wickenden and his wife Ann. Martha appears in the 1851 census living with her parents and siblings at Edenbridge Street. In 1861 she was living with her aunt and uncle in Reigate in Surrey, when she was described as a house maid. By 1871 she had moved to London, living in the Covent Garden area as a servant in the household of a florist and fruiterer.

On 13th August 1874, aged 27, Martha married a carman named James Godsmark. At the time of their marriage both were living at 48 St James Road in Bermondsey, which was James's sister Harriet's house. Martha and James had one daughter, Martha Louise, born in 1875. The 1881 census finds them living in Rotherhithe. By 1891 they had moved to Peckham in the parish of Camberwell, where Martha was to stay for the rest of her life. In both the 1891 and 1901 censuses Martha and James were living at 71 Naylor Road. Their daughter Martha was married in 1898 to a James Maple.

Some time between 1901 and 1910 Martha and James moved to 33 Parkstone Road in Peckham. James died in 1910, aged 61. The 1911 census finds Martha living alone at 33 Parkstone Road. She outlived James by nearly 14 years and died on 2nd January 1924 at Camberwell Infirmary. At the time of her death she had been living at 81 Azenby Road. She left an estate worth £654 3s. 9d. to her daughter.
