Martha Smith Adams, 84, passed away peacefully at Munson, Ohio home on May 24. She was best known for her generous and caring heart, but she was famous for her 14-day pickles. She is predeceased by her husband, Aimel "Mick" Adams, with whom she loved to dance. They enjoyed traveling, mostly near the ocean and enjoyed "quiet back to nature" spots.
She wrote of her life "I had my feet in the Caribbean with flippers on and I drove through a redwood tree and across the Golden Gate Bridge. I went to the New York World's Fair and I rode a cable car to the top of Stone Mountain. I stood on the edge of the Grand Canyon and danced a polka at a Milwaukee Tavern. I ate at a banquet in an Officers' Club at Fort Jackson, South Carolina and I walked in to work at night watching the first satellite fly overhead. I rode a motorcycle to Letchworth State Park in Western New York and watched my husband hang glide at Kitty Hawk. I sat in line for ten hours to buy kitchen cabinets. I fought for and saved maple trees. I saw whales in the Atlantic Ocean and walked in the cemetery where Governor William Bradford (ancestor) is buried. I got my money refunded on non-refundable airline tickets. In 1946, I stood in line to get married. In 2002 I tried to run over myself with my truck and in June of 2004, I survived a saddle blood clot in both lungs."
She was born in Rome, OH. At 16, she went to Cleveland, worked at Stouffer's Restaurant and graduated from East High. She was a hard worker and worked almost all of her life. She worked at Junction Restaurant, IRC Fibers, Gibson Greeting Cards and the U.S. Post Office. She was an active citizen of Munson, rallying the residents to save the maple trees when Bass Lake Rd. was widened, arranging meetings for voters with candidates and recruited large support for the Munson Fire Department "Day at the Races". She was an active member of the quilting group at Fowler's Mill Church and attended Morning Star Church when her health permitted.
In addition to her husband, she is predeceased by three siblings: Ruth Sanfilipo, Carolyn Burns and Walter Smith as well as her beloved son, Robert E. Loomis, Jr. She is survived by three siblings: Mildred Barta, Esther Nagle, and Roy Tancre, two children: Dr. Malcolm Loomis (wife, Andrea) of Utah and Suzanne Renee Conley (husband, John) of Chardon, 17 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
A memorial gathering will take place Saturday, June 22nd at the Munson Township Park on Bass Lake Rd. from 2 – 4 pm. All are welcome to come and bring memories to share (there will be pickles).
