Springfield Man Killed by Train at Grade Crossing
A Springfield man was killed instantly last night when his car was struck by a train at a grade crossing in Grand Island, Neb.
Dead is Jess W. Palmer, 58, of 2051 Elizabeth, a former boilermaker of the Frisco Railroad's west shops here. Mr. Palmer had been employed as a boilermaker for the Union Pacific in Grand Island for the past seven years but had continued to maintain a home here.
Relatives said that Mr. Palmer, who is partially deaf, apparently didn't hear the oncoming train as his car passed over the crossing about 7 p.m. His body will be returned to Springfield for services and burial under direction of Herman Lohmeyer.
Surviving are his wife, Martha of the home; three sons, Elmer of Wichita, Floyd, who is in the Navy, and James of the home; four daughters, Mrs. Roy Tate and Mrs. Tom Mitchell of 1628 East Commercial, Mrs. James Plaster of 1331 West Chase and Miss Veda May Palmer of the home; one brother, Martin of Springfield; a half-brother, James of Hastings, Neb.; three sisters, Mrs. Walter Massey of Tulsa, Mrs. Harold Chambers of Vancouver, Wash., and Mrs. Tom Douglas of Tacoma, Neb.

James W. "Jim" Palmer, 78, passed away on December 22, 2005. Jim served as a radioman at Johnson Island, in the Navy, during World War II. Jim held jobs with the Santa Fe Railroad and the Federal Penitentiary before becoming a postal carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, where he retired after many years of service. He enjoyed visiting with many old and new friends. He is survived by his daughters, Pamala Palmer, Janice Riedle and Leslie Taylor, all of Springfield, Beth Mounts and her husband, Dan, of Republic, and Fayon Weeks and her husband, Mark, of Wichita, Kansas nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Evaline Palmer, and two sisters, Alice Mitchell and Frances Jean Plaster. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, December 27, 2005, at ThiemeShadel Funeral Service at White Chapel, with Pastor Tommy Loving, officiating. Interment and full military honors will follow in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. Tuesday until time of service. In his honor, a memorial has been established with the American Heart Association, 2446 E. Madrid, Springfield, Missouri 65808 or may be left with the funeral home. Martha Evaline Palmer, 83, Springfield, died May 16 in Cox Medical Center North after an extended illness.
Born in Melborne, she had lived in Springfield most of her life. Mrs. Palmer worked many years in the garment industry and was a long-time member of Hamlin Memorial Baptist Church as well as an active member of the Royal Neighbors, Navy Mothers Club, VFW Auxiliary, The Grandmothers Club, and other groups. She was married in 1924 to Jesse W. Palmer, who preceded her in death Nov. 10, 1955.
Surviving are three sons, Jesse, Norton, Kan., James and Sherman both of Springfield; four daughters, Pauline Tate, Springfield, Alice Mitchell, Fenton, Mich., Frances Jean Plaster, Rogersville, and Veda May Casselman, Springfield; a brother; six sisters; 26 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Ragan-Thieme Funeral Home North with the Rev. Calivn[sic] Maberry officiating. Burial will be in Springfield National Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society.
