Martha was the daughter of John Black (1766–1844) and his wife Sarah Gass (1767–1859).

As an old maid, nearly 50 years old, Patsey married widower Rev. Thomas Springer Bronston Sr (1791-1859) on 6 Jan 1852 in Richmond. Tom was her brother Samuel's father-in-law.

In an indenture found in the Richmond Courthouse, He agreed to care for her and she signed over her land and money to him, excepting only her dower interest.

She lived five years after their marriage, and family lore says she died suddenly.
