Martha Bell Rogers
Birth: 1765
Death: Aug. 23, 1839
This gravestone (using enlarged photo) says:
In
Memory of
Martha Bell
Consort of
James Rogers Jr.
who departed this Life
Aug. 23rd 1839.
Aged 74 years
In Early History of Old Hanover Church, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, by Rev. Thomas H. Robinson, D.D., published in 1878 by the Historical Society of Dauphin County, page 35, says Martha Rogers, wife of James Jr. was born in 1765 and died 23 Aug 1839. The day in August and the age at death were both hard to read until I compared them to this book. I believe it is correct.
A Revolutionary War medallion is attached to this grave (middle on stone, on the left). Her father in law is buried here also.
JB adds: Thomas Bell and Ann Graham's "Daughter Martha Bell married James Rogers Jr. 13 Feb 1812. This is according to an application to join the "Sons of the American Revolution" placed by their descendant, Benjamin Rogers Howell b. 1876.
Benjamin Rogers Howell was a son of George Taylor Howell b. 1848 & his wife, Mary Rogers Howell b. 1850 & m. 9 Sep 1875. Benjamin Howell was a grandson of James Sharon Rogers b. 1813 - d. 1895 and his wife, Jane Snodgrass Rogers who died 1888 & was married 23 July 1840. Benjamin Howell was a great grandson of James Rogers Jr. b. 1768 & d. 1823 & his 2nd wife, Martha Bell Rogers b. 1771 - d. 1839 & married 13 Feb. 1812.
These facts are taken from the application."
