C, 23rd Reg't Michigan Infantry, Aug. 11, 1862 at Vienna, Michigan. Mustered in Sept. 12, 1862 at E. Saginaw, Michigan. In hospital Oct. 3, 1862 in Louisville, Kentucky. Where he died on Dec. 15, 1862 from Phthisis Pulmonalis. He is buried in Louisville.

Taken from the book "The Covered Wagon Way" by May Howe Beardslee: "He (Marshall Howe) sold land in Baldwinville, New York in 1859 and moved his wife and their three children to Michigan. They had another son, born on March 26, 1860, who died at birth. Marshall joined the Union army in Saginaw in 1862, where he was in training. He came home on a furlough on September 2, 1862. The next morning, September 3, their fourth child "Carrie" was born. Marshall stayed at home until September 7, before returning to his Regiment in Saginaw. Two weeks from then, he left with the other soldiers for the south never to return."
