About Mark Schulman
Mark Samuel Schulman was born 27 May 1905 in Minsk, Russia. Mark emigrated to the United States in 1914 [1930 U.S. Census] and married Esther Wiseman before the birth of their daughter Roberta in 1934.
Mark Schulman's start in the grocery business appears to have started in the mid to late-1930's when he ran the meat concession inside Lloyd's Market at 3rd and Catalina in Los Angeles California. This market, incidentally, generated some well-known names in the Los Angeles food business including Phil Harris, who founded Hiram's Markets, who owned the grocery concession; and Abraham and Herman Davis, father and son, who ran the service deli concession at Lloyd's Market. Herman Davis would later go on to work as the Deli Buyer for Southern California grocery chain, The Boys Market, founded by the Goldstein brothers. [Source: Deli News Magazine, May 1968, pg. 15]
Mark found early business success in America when he founded the Southern California supermarket chain Clark Markets in 1945, whick grew to 15 stores serving many communities before being acquired by Food Giant stores several years later. Schulman hired some of the most talented people in the grocery industry at Clark Markets, many of which went on to find success with other grocery chains in Southern California.
Along with his brother Irwin, Mark Schulman was an early pioneer of Palm Springs, in building the Palm Springs Riviera Hotel, which opened for business in 1958. The Riviera Hotel became a popular vacation spot for many in the Southern California area, was also a hang-out for the "Rat Pack" and frequently featured popular stars such as Elvis Presley, Desi Arnaz and others.
Schulman and his wife Esther established "The Mark and Esther Schulman Foundation" which became a key benefactor of many humanitarian works and causes throughout Los Angeles. The Jewish Home for the Aging has two Schulman buildings: a medical center and a social hall. In 1999, the foundation endowed a chair to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in the discipline of organ transplants and provided funding for an obstetric wing of the hospital. Because of Mark Schulman's dedication to children's causes, he and his wife have endowed Vista Del Mar Children's Home with an arts and crafts building, and they also dedicated the lobby of the Zimmer Children's Museum.
In addition to his many philanthropic involvements, he was active in City of Hope; a long-time member of the Friars Club, where he headed up their charity foundation for several years; and served as the president of the Sportsmen Club.
Mark Schulman passed away on 20 July 2002 in California. At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife of 71 years, Esther; daughter, Roberta (Marvin) Holland; son, Richard (Marcia); six grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. His numerous contributions to the grocery industry and philanthropic support and caring for others established a tremendous legacy that his family can always take great pride.

Eulogies:Mark Schulman Philanthropist, Humanitarian and Entreprenuer, Dies at 97 by Roberta Holland
September 5, 2002 | 7:59 pm
Mark Schulman, philanthropist and entrepreneur, died July 20 at the age of 97.
He was born in Minsk, Russia, and came to the United States in 1914. He prospered in the Los Angeles supermarket industry and in 1945, he began the Clark Market chain, which grew to 15 stores before it was sold to Food Giant. He also joined his brother, Irwin, an early pioneer of Palm Springs, in building the Palm Springs Riviera Hotel. He later served as director of the board of City National Bank from 1975-1991.
Above all, Schulman wanted to give something of himself back to the community that was so good to him. As a result, The Mark and Esther Schulman Foundation is responsible for many humanitarian works throughout Los Angeles. The Jewish Home for the Aging has two Schulman buildings: a medical center and a social hall. In 1999, the foundation endowed a chair to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in the discipline of organ transplants and provided funding for an obstetric wing of the hospital.
Because of his dedication to children's causes, he and his wife have endowed Vista Del Mar Children's Home with an arts and crafts building, and they also dedicated the lobby of the Zimmer Children's Museum.
For over 45 years, the family has belonged to Temple Emanuel of Beverly Hills, where the social hall bears their name and where they helped provide earphones for congregants with hearing problems.
Although Los Angeles was always Schulman's first priority, he was deeply connected to the State of Israel, the home of his wife's parents, and built a sports center there to honor them.
In addition to his philanthropic involvements, he was active in City of Hope; a long-time member of the Friars Club, where he headed up their charity foundation for several years; and served as the president of the Sportsmen Club.
He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Esther; daughter, Roberta (Marvin) Holland; son, Richard (Marcia); six grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
