Notes

The identity of the wife of Robert RUTHERFORD Jr. has not yet been discovered. She was probably not Margaret VAWTER according to a 1998 post to the Vawter Family Genealogy Forum (see below).

1688 July. Bartholomew VAWTER made a deed of gift to Margaret RUTHERFORD, daughter of Robert RUTHERFORD. --Old Rappahannock Co. Deeds, Book 7, 1682-1688, p.523, Virginia State Library, Richmond, VA. (The record of this gift has puzzled RUTHERFORD and VAWTER descendants for several decades, and answers have not yet been discovered.)

In his will, dated August 16, 1717, Bartholomew Vawter made a bequest to his daughter Margaret. --Essex Co. Wills, Book 15, pp.95-96, Courthouse, Tappahannock, VA. (Note: this Margaret could not have been a daughter of Bartholomew, she could have been a younger sister though)

"The date of Vawter's immigration proves that Margaret Vawter married Robert Rutherford, Jr., instead of Robert Rutherford, his father." --William Kenneth and Anna Clay (Zimmerman) Rutherford, Genealogical History of the Rutherford Family, (3rd rev. ed., 1986, reprint, Marceline, MO: Walsworth Publishing, 2001), 142.

VAWTER GenForum. Posted by Georgene Jurgensen, June 20, 1998, message #16. The Margaret who married Robert RETTERFORD (RUTHERFORD), Sr., is not Margaret VAWTER daughter of Bartholomew. Margaret VAWTER dau. of Bartho. married Thomas S. TINSLEY III. The Margaret who md. Robert RUTHERFORD, Sr., was b. ca. 1644 according to a deposition in court listing her age. Bartholomew VAWTER gave a gift of a cow calfe to this Margaret so her connection to him is yet unknown. She could be a sister or is old enough to be his mother who may have married for a second time. I have additional research on this. Posted by Georgene Jurgensen, July 24, 1998. We now have information that no Margaret VAWTER was b. ca. 1670. This was developed by the RUTHERFORD researchers to satisfy a deed posted in 1688 that shows a Bartholomew VAWTER giving a calf to Margaret, daughter of Robert RUTHERFORD and wife Margaret.
