Research on the Thompson family of Russell County, Virginia has reached a major block. It has stopped on nine Thompson siblings that popped up in Russell County in the early 1770s. Their names are William, Richard, John, Susannah(Johnson), Margaret (Roman), Martha (Ferrell), Elizabeth (Elam), Sally (Elam), and Rachel (Emmett). No one knows where they came from or who their parents are. Their relationship to each other was recently proven by a lawsuit discovered in the Wytheville, Virginia Courthouse dealing with Richard. The task now is to find their parents and where they came from before moving to Russell County. Personally, I believe the Russell County Thompsons have to be related to the Tazewell County Thompsons from Ireland. They lived relatively close to each other. I also believe the Russell County Thompsons have to be related to Captain James Thompson who owned a lot of land in Russell and Washington Counties. Of course, this is proven. I believe that the Fincastle and Botetourt County records could hold some answers. Russell County was part of these counties.
