Facts and Events
Margaret M'Klear (Mk'Clear) (McLain) was actually daughter of George McLair (also written as: McKlear, McClure), the Physician and Portioner in Preston, and where his father George McLair of Prestown, N. B. , established his claim, in May, 1664, to be son and heir of George McLair, — as the Scotch 'Inquisitiones Generales,' abridged by Thomson, show. George McLair had married Isobel Seton as her second husband (she married firstly, Normand Blackadder the Baillie of Cockenzie), eldest daughter of Robert Seton, Baillie of Tranent and younger son of the family of the Seton's of St. Germains by his wife Jean Menies, and a cousin of the Earl of Winton. Margaret McKlear was the eldest daughter of George McLain and Isobel Seton. Countess of Winton was passing through Bellingham in 1711, on her way to Dilston, the seat of James Earl of Derwentwater when from from fatigue of body and mind, at Bellingham was taken in premature labour, and gave birth to Charles Seton, according to several testimonies at the Bailies of the burgh of Canongate case in 1825.[1] It seems she divorced her husband, the Earl of Winton, when he was arrested for treason, or maybe they were never married. There are rumours of two other marriages for her later that need more research. From 1716, her married name became Corsby.[2] Her husband could be James Corsby[3] and from 1723, her married name became Jolly.[2] The Seton family website claims the she died 8 August 1714, but no source is listed.[4] Find a grave say in Edinburgh, also unsourced.[4] References
