Margaret Jane Keighley was born on 17th September 1845 in Hull, Yorkshire, daughter of Margaret Jane Keighley, formerly Lang, and her husband Robert Poppleton Keighley, a seed merchant. The 1851 census finds Margaret and her siblings living at 6 Charlotte Street in Hull. By 1861 they had left Hull and moved to the London area, living in Lee in the south-eastern suburbs.
On 25th July 1865, aged 19, Margaret married Augustus Frederick Timothy, a wharfinger (harbourmaster). They married at Christ Church in Lee. Augustus was nearly sixteen years her senior and a widower, having a son from his first marriage. Margaret and Augustus went on to have another eight children together between 1866 and 1880, although one died as a baby in 1874.
Margaret and Augustus were relatively well off. They lived in a large house at 1 Percy Villas on the High Street in Eltham, appearing there in both the 1871 and 1881 censuses. In 1881 they had five servants living with them, and in 1881 they had seven servants.
Augustus died on 20th April 1881, at home at 1 Percy Villas. He was 51. His estate was valued at over £26,000, which was a substantial amount of money at the time.
After Augustus's death, for reasons that are not known, Margaret and the children stopped using the surname Timothy, reverting instead to her maiden name of Keighley. (Apart from one of Margaret's sons, Frederick William Donald Timothy, who took to calling himself Donald Cornwallis.)
Margaret's oldest son emigrated to Australia in 1885, and her second son emigrated to Canada in 1889.
The 1891 census finds most of Margaret's other children living at 17 Rivercourt Road in Hammersmith, a detached villa in the western suburbs of London, although Margaret was not with them on census night, being instead in hospital in Lewisham.
Margaret's next sighting is not for another twenty years. In that time her second youngest son emigrated to America in 1894, but he died in 1904 in Arizona, aged 28.
The 1911 census finds Margaret living with her youngest son and his wife and son at Thames Ditton in Surrey.
Margaret later moved to 16 St John's Road in Penge, which at that time was just outside the county of London in Kent. She died in Penge on 23rd February 1923, aged 77.
