Newspaper article PIONEER HERE IN '76 DIES, AGE 97 Mrs. M. J. Masterson One of Earliest Settlers. (Richard and Howard King great grandmother) Mrs. Margaret J. Masterson age 97, who had been a resident of the state since 1876, died yesterday at her son's home, W1006 Fifth avenue. She was one of the oldest settlers of this region. She is survived by three sons, D. L. Masterson and J. G. Masterson of Spokane and O. B. Masterson of Idaho, and two daughters, Mrs. Hewett of Seattle and Mrs. A. Faultoner of California. The body is at Turnbull's and will be taken to Rathdrum for burial. Mrs Masterson settled on the site of Spokane Falls in 1876 when there was little here byt Indians and a ----- ------ ----- ---- --- ---- ------ ------ since that time she lived here, in Rathdrum and Seattle. She was born in Springfield, Ill., and in 1865 crossed the plains by mule team with her husband and settled in Oregon. There they remained until their removal to this district, where they settled on a farm near Trent. After a year on the farm they moved to Spokane, where Mr. Masterson built the Western hotel, the first hotel in Spokane Falls. They operated this for some time when they moved to Rathdrum and bought a hotel there. Mr. Masterson died there in 1894 and Mrs. Masterson came back to Spokane.
MRS. MASTERSON WILL BE LAID TO REST AT RATHDRUM The body of Mrs. Margaret J. Masterson, pioneer Spokane woman who died late yesterday at the home of her son, D. L. Masterson, W1006 Fifth avenue, will be forwarded today to Rathdrum, Idaho, for burial. Mrs. Masterson was 97 years old and settled in Spokane Falls in 1876 when the town was a trading post. She was born in Springfield Ill., came west by mule team and settled in Oregon. From there the family moved to a farm near Trent and to Spokane, where Mr. Masterson built the Western hotel, the first in the town. Later they moved to Rathdrum, where Mr. Masterson bought a hotel. He died there in 1894. Another son, J. G. Masterson, lives in Spokane and a third, O. B. Masterson, lives at Rathdrum. There are two daughters, Mrs. Hewett of Seattle, and Mrs. A. Faultoner in California. References
