Her death record identifies her mother as Placida Amarillas, born in California. Assuming this is Placida (Martinez) Amarillas (who lived but was not born in California), then Placida must have been her step-mother. This would explain why Manuela was not in the 1870 U.S. census record with her father's family. Placida's first husband, Teodoro Pesqueira, was about 25 years older than her (according to the 1870 census), so it is not surprising that he might have a daughter almost as old as her. It is possible that this is the Maria Manuela Pesqueira Castro (daughter of Teodoro Pesqueira and Franca Castro) baptized in Sonora, Mexico 14 Dec 1848[3], but that would have made her even older at her death (110 instead of 108). Also, the baptismal month does not match her birth month as given in her death record. References
