Luther simplified the spelling of his name from Teerpenning to Terpening.
This family resided on Tillotson Road, north of Shultz, in Hope township, where Luther was a farmer on the family farm.
The Terpening farm backed up to the farm of Ella's father, David R. Smith, who resided on Shultz Road.
After Luther's death, Ella resided at Midland Park, Gull Lake, Kalamazoo County.
Both Luther and Ella and five of their children are buried in the Cedar Creek Cemetery, Hope Township, Barry County, Michigan.

In 1900, they lived in Barry County, Luther was 43, Ella, 31. The children were "Lottie, 15, Royal, 14, Lloyd, 13, Laura 10, Elmer 8, Pearl 6, Maggie 4, Dora & Ora, both 2, and Levi, 11 months.
