I have searched for over fifty years for the wife of Jesse Scoville without success. Of course, Jesse may well have married someone in New Hampshire or in Vermont, which would complicate things. But surely some one of these children of Jesse must have recorded the name of Jesse's wife in their bible. These are prominent families. They must have known the name of their mother.

Since Henry was born in 1790, the marriage probably took place about 1788. Jesse bought his uncles's property in Jan. 1787, which may be closer in time. A forlorn hope is in a Lucy Stocking, b. in 1769 in Middle Haddam, CT., dau. of Reuben Stocking and Sarah Hurlbut. The location and the time and the relationships suggest a possibility, but we don't know whether that Lucy survived or whether she married.

Jesse was perhaps born in East Haddam where his father Thomas lived. He went with his father to New Hampshire, and is shown on lists from Marlow in 1777. Jesse, I believe, was alone in returning to Connecticut. Why did he return? Perhaps his buying his Uncle Samuel's estate in Plymouth, CT provided a good opportunity. Perhaps he had a girlfriend back in the Middletown area, as some of his siblings did. We read: "On Jan. 22, 1787 Samuel Scoville [his uncle] of Watertown sold to Jesse Scoville of Watertown ' the farm on which I now live, 110 acres, meaning to convey my whole estate in Watertown to the said Jesse.'" Could Jesse have married a dau. of Samuel, from whom he bought the estate? No Lucy is shown.

Jesse was a grantor in excess of 22 Plymouth, CT deeds. These need further study.

Between Oct. 13, 1785 and Feb. 7, 1791, Jesse Schovel and Timothy Sperry (another ancestor) were added to the enrollment of St. Matthew's church in Plymouth.

Jesse's name appears on Sept. 19, 1791 on the roll of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church at East Plymouth. [The church is still there with a service once a year.] His will was presented in court by Henry Scoville on May 31, 1828 (Waterbury Probate records, Vol.7, p.362) Bequests to son Harry, to heirs of dau. Lucy Frisbie, dec'd, to wit: Emmeline, Henry, Lucius Frisbie; to my three daughters: Clary Baldwin, Nancy Barney, Sophia Bradley.
