Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at two o'clock at Knapp's Parlors for the late Mrs. C. F. Worthen, who passed away Tuesday after an illness of several months. Elder Lewis Johnson of Seattle, assisted by Elder H. Z. Davis of Bellingham will conduct the services.
Lucy Bates was born in Hartford, Vermont, Feb. 21, 1859, and lived in that township until 1914, when she came to Lynden. She was married June 15, 1881, to George Williams, who died Feb. 4, 1903. On Nov. 25, 1914, she was married to C. F. Worthen, with whom she had been acquainted many years.
She leaves to mourn her loss her aged husband, C. F. Worthen of Lynden, her mother, Mrs. Miranda Bates of Hartland, Vermont, two sons, Louie Williams of Los Angeles, Cal., and Irving Williams of Woodstock, Vermont, three daughters, Mrs. R. J. Leo of Portland, Oregon, Mrs. J. E. Pruett of Pueblo, Colo., and Ruth Williams, and an adopted daughter, Winona Williams of Lynden; eight grandchildren; two brothers, Edward Bates of Lancaster, Pa., and Homer Bates of Windsor, Vermont; and two sisters, Mrs. Abbie Webster of Waltham, Mass., and Mrs. Minnie MacArthur of Hartland, Vermont. Besides these, there are the two sons and two daughters, and seventeen grandchildren of Mr. Worthen, to whom she had endeared herself, as if she had always been a member of the family.
For more than a year, her health had been failing and for six months, it was known that her condition was serious. During this time she was tenderly cared for by her daughter, Ruth, who is a trained nurse. She passed away at her home in Lynden April 18, 1922 at the age of sixty-three years, one month and twenty-five days.
Grandma Worthen, as she was lovingly called by many besides her grandchildren, was quiet and unassuming in her manner, but was ever ready to help those in need of help and her great desire during her sickness was to regain her health that she might continue to be of service to her loved ones. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, the Women's Christian Temperance Union and the Woman's Relief Corps of Lynden. In all these circles, she will be greatly missed.
