Hauenstein earned a California teaching certificate from the University of California at Santa Barbara and subsequently taught at Robert E. Lee School and worked for the California Teachers Association. In the mid-1960s, she and her husband founded Sunshine House, which later came to be known as DART, as part of the Indian Wells Valley Association for Retarded Citizens, and they both served on the organization's board of directors.
