Lily May Wildman was born in 1895 at Pulloxhill in Bedfordshire, daughter of a railway navvy named James Wildman and his wife Florence. Lily appears in the 1901 census living with her parents in Pulloxhill. In the 1911 census she was still at Pulloxhill, but working as a general servant for a Miss Annie Howe at Meadhook, a farm just outside the village.
Lily met a young man named Ralph Marshall from the nearby town of Luton, and they started seeing each other. He went to fight in France during the First World War. In 1917 Ralph was injured, and taken to a military hospital at Le Treport in Normandy. Ralph's family was informed that he could be visited at public expense. Ralph's father, John Marshall, and Lily went to France to visit him. Ralph died shortly after their visit.
After the war, Lily married Ralph's younger brother, Stanley George Marshall. They had one daughter. At the outbreak of the Second World War, Stan and Lily were living at 71 Harcourt Street in Luton, and Stan was working in Luton's hat-making industry.
Lily died in 1950, aged 54. Stan outlived her by twenty years.
