McDowell appears on the roster of the Chickasaw Guards, Company H, 11th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry Volunteers, CSA, mustered into state service March 19, 1861, mustered into service at Lynchburg, Virginia, May 15, 1861. The record reflects that he was a private. This record asserts that he was in all battles and never wounded. The National Parks Service's Civil War Soldiers and Sailors Database, confirms his unit and rank.
