    LEONARD WOODS

    Son of Rev. Dr. Leonard and Abigail (Wheeler) Woods, was born in Newbury, Mass., November 24, 1807. His father, a graduate of Harvard in 1796, became Professor in the Theological Seminary at Andover, Mass., in 1808; and, having held this office with eminent reputation for thirty eight years, died in Andover, August 24, 1854, aged 80.

    He was prepared for college at Phillips Academy, Andover; entered the Freshman class at Dartmouth, in the Spring of 1824, and remained there a part of one term ; subsequently entered the Sophomore class in Union College, Schenectady, N.Y., where he graduated in 1827 ; studied Theology at Andover Theological Seminary, 1827–30; was licensed to preach by the Londonderry, N.H., Presbytery, in 1830; was Assistant Teacher in the Seminary at Andover, 1831–32; published a translation of Knapp's Theology, 1831-33; was ordained by the Third Presbytery of New York, at Laight Street Church, 1833; edited the "Literary and Theological Review," New York, 1834–37; was Professor of Biblical Literature in Bangor Theological Seminary, 1836–39; was President of Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Me., 1839–1866; travelled in Europe, 1867–68, for historical researches, the results of which are now in the course of publication by the Maine Historical Society. Since his return, he has resided in Brunswick.

    He received the degree of D.D. from Waterville College in 1839, and from Harvard College in 1846 ; and the degree of LL.D. from Bowdoin in 1866.

    Besides the works before named, he has published Eulogies on Daniel Webster and Prof. Parker Cleaveland, an Address on the opening of the New Hall of the Maine Medical School, and various articles in the Literary and Theological Review, the Biblical Repository, and the volumes of the Maine Historical Society.
