The identification of [immigrant] Michael's grandfather as an older Leonard Metcalf of Beare Parke in Yorkshire in the 1898 genealogy [by Isaac Stevens Metcalf] was challenged in 1932 [by Moriarty, in NEHGR 78:63]. The 1932 author suggested ... that Michael's grandfather was an older Michael Metcalf of Apperside... Neither identification was ever proved or disproved. But a long available pedigree of more prominant Metcalfs of Yorkshire shows the sons of the older Leonard Metcalf of Beare Park as John, Bryan, and Roger. Thus the original identification appears to be incorrect [because Michael's father's was the younger Leonard of Beare Park].
