While living near the present cities of Salem and Roanoke in Botetourt County, Virginia, Leonard Houtz married twice. His first wife was Anna Ashalman (Eschelmann?) and in September of 1815 he married his second wife Elizabeth Garst, daughter of John Nicholas Garst and widow of David Frantz. There were five children born to his first wife and two children born to Elizabeth.
In 1818, Leonard and Elizabeth moved to Logan County, Ohio where Leonard became one of the founders of the city of Bellfontaine. By his death in 1824, he had accumulated some 2,444 acres of land in Logan County.
