Our youngest brother, Leo Courtney Culligan, was born on December 7, 1897 in Yankton, South Dakota, and passed away on January 3, 1990. His father, John Culligan, died in 1902 and his mother became a father as well as a mother to him. We moved to Sioux City, Iowa in 1898 when Leo was one-year old.

His education was secured in St. Mary's parochial school, Sioux City, Iowa. He was there until 1909 when he moved to St. Paul, Minnesota. He joined his brothers Emmett and John at St. Thomas Academy and finished High School there in 1915. He attended St. Thomas College for two years and then transferred to the University of Minnesota where he is was admitted into the pre-medical department. He completed his medical courses in 1922 and after serving one-year as an intern at Anker Hospital, St. Paul, he was accepted at the Mayo Foundation, Rochester, Minnesota for graduate work in Surgery. He remained there until July 1926 at which time he began practice with his brother, Dr. John in St. Paul, Minnesota.

In 1930 he received an offer to join the surgical staff at the Veteran's Hospital, Minneapolis, Minnesota, and accepted it. He remained on this staff until 1943.

Shortly after leaving the Veteran's Hospital he became affiliated with Dr. Frank Hirshfield, 350 Medical Arts Bldg., Minneapolis where he has maintained his office up to the present time.

Dr. Leo was appointed in 1944 to the active staff of St. Mary's Hospital, Minneapolis as a Surgeon. He has taken part in the development of the hospital, being made Chief of Staff for the year 1951-52, and in 1952 also became secretary to the Lay Advisory Board, which place he still maintains. He was chairman of St. Mary's Hospital Staff Building Committee, which was established in 1952. When the Convalescent Extended Care Unit was opened in 1968 he was appointed to the Board. He was Chief of Surgery at St. Mary's during the year 1968-69. He also was appointed a member of the Medical Policy Committee in 1969.
