Apparently upon her mother's death in 1862, Lenora and her brother were taken in by a childless couple (Andrew and Christina Reed). Each sibling attended the Frushour Corner School. The Reeds are buried at the Fairview Cemetery.

After Lenora married James Hippensteel, their home was located on the Reed farm, directly across from the Reed home.
