Lemuel, s. Ens. Samuel and Anne, [born] July 10, 1763.

  2. There is a Samuel and Ann Payson of Roxbury and a Samuel and Ann Payson of Dorchester. This birth being in Roxbury, Lemuel would normally be assumed to be associated with the first, but all signs are that he belongs to the second. He would fit in either. No guardian is appointed for Lemuel in 1772 whereas there is for all other children of the Roxbury couple. Lemuel was the name of the brother of Ann (Robinson) Payson so a family name of the Dorchester family. Source:Essex Genealogist (Massachusetts) (Essex Society of Genealogists), Vol. 15, p. 101, "The Newhall Family of Lynn" by Marion A. MacDonald, says Joanna Newhall m. 1801 Lemuel Payson, s/o Samuel and Anne (Robinson) Payson of Dorchester, 10 Jul 1763, d. 20 Sep 1822. However, the man who died on this date was age 46, so born about 1776, raising doubts (see Find A Grave which shows him being in the same tomb as his purported mother and brother but 13 years too young, and also here where age 26 in 1802). Source:Harris, Edward Doubleday. William and Anne Robinson of Dorchester, Mass. : Their Ancestors and Descendants, p. 18 and 24, places the birth of this Lemuel in 1776 (this source says 29 Jul, Essex Genealogist 13:50 says 26 Jul) but no such birth record is found, so besides not being able to resolve the discrepancy between competing secondary sources, the basis and validity of this assertion is unknown. The Robinson Genealogy do not show any entry for Lemuel b. 1763, so we are left wondering if the first Lemuel was in the Dorchester family, died before 1776, and the survivor was a second Lemuel; or was Lemuel actually in the Roxbury family and died before 1772. More research is needed.
