Lavinia Barton was born on 24th January 1878 at Luton in Bedfordshire, daughter of a straw hat sewer called Martha Jane Barton, formerly Jones, and her husband Samuel John Barton, a straw hat blocker. Lavinia appears to have become known as Lily some time after her birth, appearing in the 1891 census as Lily, marrying as "Lillie Lavinia" and appearing in the 1901 census as "Lily L.".
Lily appears in both the 1881 and 1891 censuses living with her parents and siblings on Chase Street in Luton. By 1891 she was working as a hat finisher.
In 1899, aged about 21, Lily married Prince Leopold Moss (who appears to have been known by his middle name). They went on to have four children together between 1899 and 1917, with a notable twelve year gap between their third and fourth children. For several years the family lived at "Why-ax-ye", a thatched cottage on Park Street at the southern end of Luton, appearing there in both the 1901 and 1911 censuses.[8] Leopold worked as a horse keeper at the nearby Brache Farm.
At the outbreak of the Second World War the family was living at 42 New Town Street in Luton.
Lily died in 1951, aged 73. Leopold survived her by just under six years.
