Came with his parents from Norway to Fillmore Couty, Minnesota in 1858. Moved to the Red River Valley in the spring of 1871, together with the Paulson family and others. 6 weeks were required to reach their destination as the journey of 500 miles was made with ox teams. On Jul 1, 1871 Laurits settled upon a homestead located 1/2 mile N of what now is the village of Halstad. Their first baby, Melisse, was born in a dugout on July 31 of that year and was the first white child born in that part of the Red River Valley.
