Laughlin emigrated from Ireland and arrived in America in 1836. He was first recorded in records in 1840, when he served as a sponsor for Mary Smith, who was baptized 9/2/1840. (Western Maryland Catholics 1819-1851) He married Sarah Deahl in Allegany County, MD on 2/16/1846. She was from Aurora, Preston County. Laughlin applied for citizenship in Allegany County, Maryland on October 19, 1846. He was naturalized October 21, 1848, after living in Maryland for the required 2 years. Laughlin was listed as age 35 in the Census for Preston County in 1850. He was a laborer for the B&O Railroad (Page 127, recorded 9/5/1850) He later bought land from Harrison Hagan in 1854. The deed listed him as being from Harrison County, VA. The 1860 Census of Virginia lists his land wealth at $800 and personal wealth: $234. In 1867, his land wealth and personal property totaled $979.20. The 120 acres of land was located 7 miles SW of the Courthouse along Pringle's Run, (PC Land Records, V. 36, P. 397.)

He later married Mary Catherine Stemple in 1873 in Preston County. She was listed as being from Barbour County, WV. She died of "consumption." In 1880, Laughlin was living next door to Mary Riley and her children. His three children were living with him, as well as Sonora Stemple aged 24. (1880 US Census) Laughlin later lived with Mary Riley until his death in 1884. His will is on record. (PC Wills; book 4, page 146)

Mary Riley purchased his farm after his death, A partial payment was made on 10/8/1888 after an initial agreement to buy the property was arranged through P. J. Crogan on 4/8/1887. (See Scrapbook)
