News Article YOUNKERS YOUTH DIES AFTER AUTO ACCIDENT-- Blow Out of Tire Responsible for Tragedy off Lincoln Highway -- Victim's Chest Crushed -- The bursting of a tire on a Hupmobile sedan resulted in the death this morning of Kendrick Madison Batterton, 11-year old, who was riding in the rear seat of his father's machine. The youth died in the West Side sanitarium at 10:18 o'clock, two hours after the accident occurred on the Lincoln highway, near Farmers. He is the only son of Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Batterton, 9 Odell avenue, Yonkers, N.Y. Mr. and Mrs. Batterton and their son were on their way to this city, while enroute home from a tour over the Gettysburg battlefield. The parents were on the front seat with the father at the wheel. According to the story told by the parents to Dr. L.U. Zech, the coroner, who made an investigations of the accident, the machine was going at a rate of approximately 45 miles an hour along the highway in the direction of York. Suddenly there was a loud report of a tire blowout and the driver lost control. The machine rolled over several times. A party of tourists from Minneapolis were the first to arrive on the scene of the accident. They lifted the wrecked car on its wheels. The Batterton boy was lying underneath the wreckage. The injured Yonkers tourists were then taken to the West Side Sanitarium by Harry W. Baldwin, of Gettysburg R.D. An examination of the boy revealed that he had a crushed left leg, a crushed chest and internal injuries. He died without regaining conscisosness(sic) . Mrs. Battterton sustained lacerations and bruises about the right leg and right elboy(sic). She is also suffering from shock. An investigation of the accident was also made by John Kine, of the local sub-station of the state highway motor patrol. The probe by Coroner Zech revealed that the accident was unavoidable and he issued the death certificate. The parents, after leaving the West Side, registered at the Hotel Perin, where they made arrangements to have the body prepared for burial and then sent to Yonkers where interment will be made. The parents returned to their home this afternoon by train. Their damaged machine was towed to the garage of L.E. Hamme at Farmers. The body was removed from the West Side by C.A. St__k and Sons, funeral directors. Coroner Zech went to the scene of the tragedy at noon today and he secured versions of the accident from other persons. Mrs. John Dolheimer, of Thomasville, R.D. No. 1, was picking blackberries in bushes near the highway and she said she had a clear view of the accident. Her story differs from that told by the father of the victim. Mrs. Dolheimer says she saw the New York car coming at a rapid rate of speed in the direction of York. Shortly before the accident the Batterton machine passed another car. The Batterton car had proceeded only a short distance after passing the other machine when the tire blew out. The machine swerved from the highway against an embankment along side of the road and smashed into a line fence. At the impact, the Batterton boy was thrown through the top of the machine he occupied. __is believed he alighted against the fence and this caused his fatal injuries."
