Katherine's maiden name and origins have yet to be established. As an adult she indicated that she had been born around 1807 in either Ashford or the nearby parish of Ruckinge in Kent. Katherine's first confirmed sighting is in the 1841 census, when she was living at Branch Place in Shoreditch in the inner eastern suburbs of London. She described herself as Katherine Timothy, and was living with a man called Evan Timothy, who at that time was working as a wine importer. They also had four children living with them. Katherine later described herself as Evan's wife, although no marriage record has yet been found. As no record has been found either of what became of Evan's first wife, it seems reasonable to conclude that he was estranged from his first wife and therefore unable to marry Katherine. No obvious birth or baptism records have been found for Katherine and Evan's children either.
By the 1851 census Katherine, Evan and the children had moved to Peckham, in the parish of Camberwell, Surrey, in the southern suburbs of London. Evan was working as an upholder (upholsterer) and accountant in bankruptcy at the time.
Two of Katherine and Evan's children died in 1853: their sons Alfred and Junius.
The family has not been found in the 1861 census. Evan died in 1864, aged 60.
The 1871 and 1881 censuses each finds Katherine and one of her daughters and her daughter's children living in Peckham, with Katherine working as an upholsteress. Katherine died in 1885, being buried at St Giles Cemtery in Camberwell on 23rd September. She was said to be 77 years old.
