"Great grandfather Justus Richmond was born in Scharley, NY on March 27, 1815. He moved with his family to Avon, Illinois in La Salle County in 1852. His wife Catherine Wemdell Richmond died on Dec. 22, 1862.
Great grandfather wanted more land so he loaded their household possessions into three covered wagons and started west. Nine members of his family came with him. Our Grandfather Alonzo was 18 years old at the time.
They crossed into Iowa by ferry at Dubuque, IA and traveled on southwest to Collins, IA in Story County. Justus purchased 240 acres of land near Collins and at that time land was selling for eight to ten dollars an acre.
They lived in a log cabin on the farm that had been abandoned by the previous owner. Later they built a house then Justus donated some land for a school house. It was called "The Willow Creek" school.
The description of the transaction was taken from the records of the county superintendent's office at the Nevada Court House.

"Justus Richmond, father of Alonzo (Lon) wanted more land so he sold his home in Avon, IL and came west where land was selling for eight to ten dollars an acre. He bought two hundred and forty acres east of Collins. Nine members of the family came. They left Avon, where they loaded their household goods into three covered wagons, crossed into Iowa by ferry at Dubuque and started across the country, toward Story County. They lived in a log house on the land they bought, the cabin had been abandoned. They lived in the cabin all the summer of 1868 until a house could be built. There were no fences, only a few picket fences around farm yards.

Jerry

while going through some more of Melissa's papers I have found an obituary for Justice S Richmond sent to her from a Karol (Robinson) Atwood,

From "The Liberator" Collins Iowa January 22 1903

Obituary Of Justice S. Richmond

Justice S. Richmond, aged 87 years, more than thirty of which were spent in Story County, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. F.P. Youngblood, in Marshalltown, Monday January 12 of pneumonia after an illiness of two weeks, but being bedfast only five days. The decresed is survived by six daughters and one son: Mrs. George Sheldon, of David City, Nebraska., Mrs. J.W. Shenkle of Collins; Mrs. F.P. Youngblood, of Marshalltown : Mrs E. Kelly of Manchester; Mrs Jacob Day, and Mrs. Wm. Miller, of Goldendale, Wash,.and Mr. Alonzo Richmond, of Rhodes. The remains were brought to Rhodes, Tuesday Jan.13, where funeral services were held at 2 o'clock. conducted by Rev. Bracket of the M.E. Church. Interment was made in Eden Cemetery.

Mr. Richmond was born in Scharey (sic Schoharie) County, NY. March 27 1815 moved with his family to LaSalle County, IL. in 1852. Here his wife died December 22, 1863. He came to Story County in 1868 and bought a large farm where the Willow Creek Church stands, making this his home for a quarter of a century.

He gave the ground upon which the Willow Creek Schoolhouse was built, it being the first one in the township. When a young man he professed Christ and united with the Missionary Baptist Church, and later with Evangelical. He ever lived according to his profession, endeavoring to conform his daily actions to the will of his Master. When after a well spent life, his body was racked with pain, death came as a welcome visitor to this good old man.

I never know what I will run across next she had nothing organized at all.
My Husband and I are going to Germany May 5th for 3 weeks. So when we get back I will really dig into things and try to make some sense out of it all and send you a packet of things I am so confused about. Maybe you can help sort it out. Melissa's sister Pauline told me they ran across a lot of Pictures and Funeral information at Melissa's house when they were going through things and took it all over to Dads So maybe dad will let me have it for a while and I can see what she has. Maybe some pictures of Justice and other family members.

Later JoAnn
