Obituary Record of Graduates of Amherst College[7] Class of 1849 JUNIUS LORING HATCH, the son of Roger C. and Hannah (Fay) Hatch, was born in Hopkinton, N.H., May 1, 1825, and was fitted for college at Kimball Union Academy. The first year after graduation he was a member of Union Theological Seminary, and the next year of Yale Divinity School. He was ordained at Gloucester, Mass., Jan. 26, 1854, and was pastor of the Congregational church there until 1856. He was acting pastor at Brooklyn, N.Y., for a short time, at Hingham, Mass., 1856-1858, at Dighton, Mansfield, and Westboro, Mass., and Concord, N.H., from 1860 to 1865. He was a teacher in Brooklyn, N.Y., and in New York City, 1858-1859, agent of Hope Life Insurance Co., New York City, 1870-1871, editor of Golden Rule, Boston, Mass., 1872, teach in Santa Clara, Cal., 1874-1876, principal of High School in Colma, Cal., 1876-1880. From 1880 to 1890 he held a clerical position in the custom House in San Francisco, Cal. From 1890 to 1894 he was commissioner of immigration. on account of the failure of his health, he then retired from active life, although for a time he-edited the religious press column of the San Francisco Chronicle. His residence was for some years at San José and afterward at Oakland, Cal. He died of paralysis at Fruitvale, Cal., Jan. 26, 1903. Mr. Hatch was married in October, 1856, to Lucy W., daughter of Capt. Addison Plummer, of Gloucester, Mass., who died Oct. 21, 1876. Of four children, three survive their father. ▼References
