Facts and Events
managed: an apartment house, Wellwood Manor, in Merchantville, for over 15 years
from Mrs. Julia Susan Schwarz Brook, 606 West Maple Ave., Merchantville 8, NJ - addressed to: Mrs. Landon A. Witt, c/o Colonel L. A. Witt, Staff Box 10, Cincnelm, U.S.N. 100, F.P.O., New York. Postmarked: Aug. 19, 1955, 8:30 PM Dearest- Just finished reading your latest letter and got a real lift from it. You seemed to be hovering about the pages. It's a miserable day here as we are getting the tail end of hurricane "Diane". Last week this time we were creating out which way Connie would strike. Rain, more rain, and strong gusts of wind have been our lot since yesterday. I am alone, yet not, as my Tiny is lying here on the floor beside my chair. Jewel and Juliette are in Ocean City ( perish the thought). It must be wicked down at the shore. Miss Jewel more than I can say but I'll have to get over it myself. Joe is working several hours a day at Union Paving so I don't see him too often. Jim called me last week. Carol blacked out at the drugstore. Dr. Walker sent her to the hospital for a cardiograph. Heart OK but blood count low. Is to have a metabolism test this week. You're so right about her appetite. I don't recall ever seeing her eat a good meal. Jim, I recall, was always preaching overeating and calorie watching to her when he lectured me. He had a point, but I really think Carol should eat well and regularly. Three babies and housekeeping take some fuel for the engine. The company in Norwood, Mass. have contacted him again and made another offer of $12,000. He is thinking it over and at the time we were talking he said he would either give them another flat no or fly up and have a conference with them. Carol's mother was at the shore but came to Maywood when the storm warnings for Connie were posted. She came in the nick of time to take over for Carol when she collapsed. So far the kiddies are OK. It must keep Jim broke paying Dr. bills. Feeling good myself, Nora. Haven't been to the doctor for five months. The old joints are no worse but the back is definitely better. Don't have a twinge in that area. Lost about 5 lbs. ( Metal please). See El Berry every ten days and the hair- do is sleek. Am busy but I don't overdo. Lately tho, I have had several bad nights. Just couldn't fall asleep tho I was tired. It's a case of thinking too much about matters that I haven't any control over. Dreamed of you, too. Saw you as a child. It was a nice dream. Now for a report on the information you asked for. Wrote to Bureau of Vital Statistics in Harrisburg for copies of death certificates of Henry and Edward Brook. Received a copy of Edward's because I was able to give the date when death occurred. Called Knights of Pythias Cemetery to check on Henry. He was buried there on June 25th 1908. Have written Harrisburg again giving the fact and am awaiting a reply. Am enclosing your grandfather Edward's, and you will note there is no town or city mentioned as to birthplace. Just the country- England. Expect Henry's will be the same. Wrote to your Uncle Ed asking him if he could remember where Henry and his dad, Edward, was born. Edward, I feel certain, was born in Manchester, as he was the first child born to Henry and Elizabeth Morris and was the only one of their many ?x?, all that was born in England having been brought over in the forties, not seventies as I thought. The enclosed copy gives his birth date. I wish I could establish the birthplace of Henry. Could be as you stated he was born in Manchester. Also asked for information about his mother and, as soon as he writes, I'll forward the information to you. Will make copy of Henry's just as soon as I receive it. One thing I noted: the clerk in the cemetery co's office told me that the lot was in the name of "Brooks" not Brook. Hadn't any for Brook, so she proceeded to give me the names and dates of the people buried there and they checked, as I recall. Your Dad, speaking of a sister, Florence, died of typhoid fever when about 8 years old. But they keep no record of where people are born. Let's keep hoping we come up with a definite place of nativity for Henry. Maybe you could find their marriage certificate in Manchester where they lived before coming over here. I should think a marriage certificate may give place where born. I must confess I am all out of clues but will continue hopeful. So glad, Nora, you bought the lovely desk and hope you can get the tables you mentioned. Today is Chris's birthday, and I have been thinking of him since I awakened this morning. Such a difference in the days as to weather. I recall it was a beautiful Sunday morning, August 18th, 1946. I just dote on the colored pictures Lanny's mother sent. Am going to have the one of Chris with the mountain goats( " they are angoras"), enlarged; also, the great picture taken of Windmere Lake. Jojo and Steve miss Julie very much. They expect to see her here when they come over. Had to explain she couldn't come over as they expected she could by just calling up on the phone. Actually, it isn't too far away, but the car situation being what it is, is a real problem. I don't see Jewel as often as I would like, but I can call her up after ten in the eve. and have a chat with her. She worries me, Nora, she is so thin. I think she works too hard and doesn't get enough rest. I am very sympathetic, as I know what she has been going through these past ten months or more. I am in a spot when she asks me why Joe doesn't come over to Haddonfield. I wouldn't hurt her for all the gold at Ft. Knox. Joe loves her dearly, but he can't take Charles any more than I. Time to check lights ( if it isn't raining too hard), lock up, and go to bed. Always remember I love you, Lanny, and Chris so much, think of you so often that, even though we are an ocean apart, you are close to me in heart and mind. Ever your Mother ( Will pray for your special intention) ( Wind is howling a gale- no walk for Tiny tonite) References
