Obituary in the Frederick News Post, January 16, 1960: 'Mrs. Julia Mason Smith, 93, wife of the late George Edward Smith, who was mayor of Frederick and Judge of the Orphans Court, died Friday at the Iliff Nursing Home, Dun Loring, Va. She was the daughter of the late Thornton Washington Mason and Ellen Virginia Forman Mason. She was born in 1867 at Riverview, W. VA., a descendant of the old and highly respected family of Virginia. Until the time she entered the nursing home last May, Mrs. Smith was an active member of the DAR and the UDC. She was also a member of a political study club and until last May a guide at the National Cathedral in Washington. One of her main interests until her death was the Society for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities. She was also an active Episcopalian. She was married to Mr. Smith in 1898 and resided in Frederick until shortly after his death in 1927. She was a resident of Washington for the past 32 years. She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Emma Mason West, a resident of the Iliff Nursing Home. Four generations of nieces and nephews also survive. Graveside services will be held at Mt. Olivet Cemetery Monday at 2 o’clock. Rev. M. D. Ashbury, rector of All Saints’ Church, this city, will officiate. Friends may call at the Everly Funeral Home, 214 West Main street, Fairfax, Va., after 4 p.m. today.' References
