In the 1870 census, there were 2 Josiah Connell's living in Mount Vernon Township, Lawrence County, Missouri, both aged 15. One was the son of Milton and Rachel E. Connell (page 37), and the other was the son of John and Frances Connell (page 38).^[3]

The 1880 census clarifies that the Josiah Connell who married Mary Alice Dells could not have been the son of John and Frances (Pennington) Connell. On 5 Jun 1880, Josiah Connel was enumerated with his wife Mary A. in Mt. Vernon Township, Lawrence County, Missouri (immediately before the family of Milton Connel), while on 9 Jun 1880, Joscia Connel was enumerated as the single son of John and Francis Connel in Green Township, Lawrence County, Missouri.^[2]

Find A Grave^[1] also identifies the husband of Mary Alice Dells as the son of Milton and Rachel (Pennington) Connell (although the 1845 birth year of Rachel given in Find A Grave must be incorrect).
