    Joshua Root, Sgt. Birth: 28 Apr 1715, Westfield, Mass. Death: 8 Dec 1797 Great Barrington, Mass. Married: (1) Sarah Mighill ABT 1747, (2) Abigail Olds, 23 Mar 1757' "He bore a conspicuous part in the Revolutionary War. In July 1776, the committee of safety of the town directed certain Tories to "deliver up their arms to Sergt. Joshua Root," who was "authorized to receive them." In the westernmost part of the town, near where he lived , is still [1870] to be seen in good preservation and carefully stoned up in the woods a wolf trap, some six feet deep, built by him. He lived in Sheffield, Mass. and in Great Barrington, in the western part of town."
