Joseph White was born on 11th April 1843 in the small hamlet of Chalk Hill in the parish of Houghton Regis, Bedfordshire. He was the son of a straw plaiter called Ann White, formerly Pateman, and her husband George White, who also worked as a plaiter. Joseph was baptised on 2nd April 1845 at the Wesleyan Methodist chapel in the nearby town of Dunstable. The 1851 census finds Joseph living with his parents and siblings at Chalk Hill.

By 1861, Joseph's father had died and his mother remarried, and they had moved into Dunstable. They were living on St Mary's, a street just south-west of the crossroads at the centre of the town, and Joseph was working as a labourer.

On 27th June 1864, Joseph married Elizabeth Neal in the nearby town of Luton. They had probably known each other since childhood as she had also lived at Chalk Hill in the late 1840s with her mother and stepfather (her half-brother James Kempson had been born there in 1847), and had also moved to Dunstable with her family before 1861.

Elizabeth and Joseph settled in Luton after their marriage, having twelve children there between 1865 and 1889. Joseph worked as a bricklayer's labourer, whilst Elizabeth was a straw bonnet sewer. Each census from 1871 to 1911 finds the family living at a different address in Luton. The 1911 census has a note in the infirmity column for Elizabeth saying "paralysis 58", suggesting she had been paralysed aged 58, which would have been around 1902 or 1903. Elizabeth died in 1912, aged 68.

Joseph survived her by eleven years. He died in 1923, aged 79.
